  This is a position for an assistant golf course superintendent that can turn the wrench. The position will carry the title of superintendent, is a superintendent in training position.   Kingswood Golf Club is seeking a highly skilled and knowledgeable superintendent or assistant superintendent to continue and enhance the Club’s position as one of the premiere semi-private golf facilities in New Hampshire. Founded in 1915, Kingswood is a member-owned Club with 18 holes of golf on roughly 80 acres. The original 18 holes were designed by Donald Ross, and the course was renovated in 1988-89 under direction of Ault, Clark & Associates, Ltd. In the 1988-89 renovation, six new greens were added using newer material of sand based & peat moss mixture. There are also 13 original greens built using native soils with some modification, with bent grass and poa annua and are of average size and slope.    
     
  The 1988 plan included new irrigation and pump facilities and hole-by-hole single row irrigation and controls which now complement the existing irrigation system that was for tees & greens only prior to the renovation.   
     
  Job Overview:  
  The position we offer has a variety of duties and responsibilities. We expect the superintendent to provide consistently high quality playing conditions throughout the course and pleasing aesthetics on the remainder of the grounds, in coordination with the Greens Committee. The responsibilities include: turf grass/plant material maintenance programs, equipment maintenance and acquisition, human resources related to golf course personnel, budget forecasting, financial management and regular budget reporting, scheduling/maintenance of irrigation systems, and pesticide and chemical acquisition, storage, application and compliance with regulatory issues. The uperintendent is expected to directly over see the environment of enthusiastic staff involvement, open communications and respect among staff (generally consisting of 7-8 members during the season), members and management, and reports to and works closely with the Chair of the Greens Committee as well as the General Manager of the Club.  
     
  Primary Duties:  
 
  • Care and maintenance of the turf, plants, shrubs, trees on the facility grounds. Particular attention to greens to promote turf health and consistent surfaces on greens consisting of bent and poa annua.
  • Work with the Greens Committee to ensure consistent quality playing conditions on the course
  • Work closely with the Golf Professional on maintenance issues affecting golf course operations
  • Develop with the Greens Committee annual operating budgets and plans for maintenance and capital improvement projects – Fiscal year ends April 1st and budget preparation occurs in November and December of each year.
  • Provide current data for monthly budget reports for Greens Committee and Board; familiarity with internal financial software
  • Develop and maintain a long range plan and schedule for future equipment acquisitions to facilitate financial planning
  • Arrange maintenance practices to minimize conflict with member play and outings in consultation with the Golf Professional and work with Greens Committee on calendaring of significant maintenance operations, such as aerification and construction projects
  • Manage expenses associated with Golf Course Operations, including payroll, supplies, chemicals, fertilizers and outside vendors in a manner consistent with the current operating budget; reordering parts, supplies and equipment as needed
  • Recruit, train, supervise and retain maintenance staff. Conduct employee performance evaluations and exercise disciplinary action.
  • Provide training and oversight for employees so that staff is working consistently with club safety and state and federal guidelines
  • Supervise and participate in the application and recording of chemical applications on the Club's grounds in compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.

  • Establish good network and communications with peers in the region to facilitate exchange of relevant information and experience
  • Remain current in reading of relevant literature and publications in the field and join and participate in appropriate professional organizations

  Minimum Qualifications:  
 
  • 1-3 years experience as a Golf Superintendent or 1st Assistant, preferably in the Tri-State area of New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine or a comparable cold weather climate
  • 2-year Degree or Certificate in Turf Management (or related field, such as agronomy, horticulture, plant science, soil science) is preferred but not required
  • Experience with bent grass and poa annua greens, and extensive knowledge of their unique requirements.
  • Solid computer Microsoft Excel skills for financial reporting and control of operations would be preferred as well
  • Pesticide Application License as required by Local, State or National requirements
  • Certification by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America is preferred

Description:  
 
  Essex Country Club is located in the Northwest of Vermont near Burlington. It is close to Lake Champlain and Mount Mansfield. The course is designed by Canadian Golf Course Architect Graham Cooke, and the course is considered a local gem. It has a reputation for outstanding putting surfaces, a solid layout with great views of the Vermont Green Mountains. The course is privately owned and is looking to improve the overall course conditions with an emphasis on the tees, bunkers, and improved weed control, especially summer annual grasses. The greens are Penncross Bentgrass with a minimal amount of Poa annua. The tees and fairways are primarily Penncross Bentgrass with some Kentucky Bluegrass and Poa annua mixed in. The roughs are Kentucky Bluegrass. The course was built in 1990 and the first green has been rebuilt. The greens are a Modified California construction. The irrigation system is manual. This is a seasonal golf environment with the course generally being open April into November.

  Summary of Basic Functions - The Equipment Manager is responsible for the maintenance, repair, storage and operation of the equipment for the golf course. Demonstrated success with previous similar golf course experience is preferred, but general maintenance of equipment will be considered. Experience with diesel, gas and 2 cycle engines.   The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent (AGCS) at LWGC reports to the Golf Course Superintendent with oversight from the General Manager. The AGCS assists with the day-to-day oversight of the maintenance and agronomic practices of the golf course and surrounding grounds including but not limited to the clubhouse landscaping and maintenance complex.

  Overview:  
  The equipment technician reports to the superintendent and oversees a comprehensive preventive maintenance program. This program includes the repair of failing equipment, keeping records of parts and labor needed to maintain each piece of equipment, and placing orders for parts and supplies needed for equipment or service. The equipment technician properly communicates any needs or problems relating to the maintenance or repair of equipment to the superintendent and/or the assistant superintendent. The equipment technician places safety as a top priority and is responsible for maintaining a clean service area and maintenance building.  
     
  Position Specific Requirements:  
 
  • Ideal candidate will have a degree or certificate from either a college or vocational school in a mechanical field of study.
  • ŸAbility to communicate effectively and keep business records. Ÿ
  • Complete knowledge of reel technology, including but not limited to: spin grinding, relief grinding, back-lapping, bedknife grinding, quality of cut adjustment, height of cut adjustments, proper bearing function, and after cut quality and appearance.
  • Working knowledge of all three major equipment manufactures in the golf industry.
  • Working knowledge of light duty as well as heavy duty golf and grounds maintenance equipment and automotive apparatuses.
  • Working knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines.
  • ŸAbility to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate course of action for repairs.
  • Effective in the trouble shooting and repair of electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Skilled in the use of a variety of equipment repair tools, and the various types of mechanical repair.
  • Must be proficient with welding and steel fabrication equipment.
  • Must be familiar with and adhere to the proper recycling and or disposal of various shop fluids and compounds that may be considered hazardous and maintain appropriate records of disposal.
